Winning at Wordle consistently isn't about knowing more words than everyone else — it's about following a process that turns each guess's clues into the smallest possible list of remaining candidates. Here's the process, start to finish.

1. Open with a letter-frequency word

Start with a word made of common, distinct letters — see ourstarting words guide for specifics. The goal of guess one isn't to guess correctly, it's to learn as much as possible.

2. Read every clue, not just the greens

It's tempting to only pay attention to green (correct) letters, but grey and yellow are just as valuable. Grey rules out a letter everywhere in the word. Yellow tells you a letter is somewhere else in the word — that's real information even though it feels like a "miss."

3. Let your second guess test new letters, not just place old ones

If your first guess only confirmed one or two letters, resist the urge to guess a "real" word attempt immediately. A second guess built from fresh, common letters (avoiding ones you've already ruled out) usually narrows the field more than trying to be clever with a near-guess.

4. Filter, don't guess from memory

Once you have a handful of clues, the list of words that still fit is usually smaller than you'd expect — but it's genuinely hard to enumerate in your head, especially with yellow (wrong-position) clues.
