The Best Wordle Starting Words, Ranked

Every Wordle strategy guide has an opinion about the "best" starting word, and most of them are chasing the wrong thing. A clever or unusual opener doesn't help you — what actually narrows the board fastest is a word built from the letters that show up most often across the answer list, arranged so you're not wasting a guess on a repeated letter.

What makes a starting word good

Two things matter, in order: how common each letter is in five-letter words, and whether the word uses five distinct letters. E, A, R, O, and T are the most frequent letters in English five-letter words — a word that uses several of them tests more of the alphabet in one guess than a word built from rarer letters like Q, X, or Z ever could.

A repeated letter is a wasted slot. If your opener has a double letter, one of those two guesses is doing no new work — you'd learn more from testing a fifth distinct letter instead.

Good openers

• CRANE — five distinct letters, all high-frequency, a strong all-round default.
• SLATE — leans on the very common S/T/E/A/L combination.
• ADIEU or AUDIO — front-loads all the vowels if you'd rather sort out vowels before consonants.

A second-guess strategy beats a "best" first word

Because Wordle's answer list only contains common words, your first guess is really about maximizing information, not guessing correctly. A more reliable approach than obsessing over the single best opener is to pair two openers that together cover ten distinct, high-frequency letters — for example CRANE followed by SOILY, or SLATE followed by CORNY. After two guesses like that, you'll usually know most of the letters in the answer even if you haven't placed them yet.
